St. Patrick’s Day has its origins in Irish culture, but the South Boston Parade has a unique history of its own. The beloved parade actually commemorates how the Continental army forced the British to retreat from Boston on St. Patrick’s Day in 1776 by faking them out with “cannons” they’d fashioned from blackening hollowed out trees and positioned in Dorchester Heights.
